VERSo [e] uTOPIA

(ita)

In the beginning of the XVI century Thomas More describes his Utopia, settling down for the first time the concept of a heaven-like island, an ideal place (Εὐ-τοπεία) which is also a non-place (Οὐ-τοπεία), since it doesn’t exist, where all of the wishes of happiness come true in all the imaginable aspects; in society, politics, economy, religion, arts, ecology, and so on.

VERSo [e] uTOPIA
proposes in the creative sphere this concept of an unattainable ideal place, which serves as a stimulus for the creative process. Quoting the Argentinean director Fernando Birri, utopias make us walk and progress towards an unreachable horizon while we draw our path through a continuous exercise of trying-failing. It’s precisely this that helps the artist’s self-knowledge and their formal and conceptual evolution.

With this in mind, plastic artist Andrea Zuppa experiments with different techniques, supports and chromatisms in order to satisfy a sort of never fulfilled aesthetic need.

His collection Figurazioni (Figurations) shows the present development stage of his painting, which composition got richer in the last years with different graphic styles (marks, scratches, engravings made with various objects) as well as with the collage technique, with drafts of Indian ink and the use of plain woods frames, unusual in his previous works.

On the other hand, the raku ceramic series Variazioni sulla sfera (Variations on the Sphere) shows his research on the utopian three-dimensional shape par exellence, considered the symbol of perfection by ancient civilizations. In his ceramics, the artist willingly drifts away from the sphere’s perfect shape, as if he’s playing for the pure pleasure of endlessly repeating a procedure almost identical to itself. Knowing that if we’d get to perfection, one day, the game will stop and the experience will end. And in the repetitive cycle of re-creating different shapes he doesn’t hide the trace of his remorses, mendings on molded matter, repairings on still visible wounds.

Lastly, poems by Francisco del Moral, collected under the title Travesía, treat the classic theme of the travel as a transformatory path. Inspired by Camino de Santiago, the poet tells us about the various stages along the walk describing them as if they were stages of life, starting from his birth in the Pyrenees, and then to the finish line in Compostela.

o ingiallisce il tuo sguardo all’improvviso,

diventi di quel grigio che ammutisce

o, malgrado lo sforzo,

non riesci a rinverdire

quanto vorrei,

quanto meriterebbe l’occasione.

English Version below:

“Maridaje” is a spanish word that is used to indicate the ideal combination between wine and food. Insiders often seek the right combinations playing on harmony and contrast of tastes. Who sits at the table has nothing to do but enjoy the choices propoused, they can be happy or annoyed by this. In analogy to the meaning of this word the serie MARIDAJE propoused by the artisti collects of artworks he has done between the years 2017 and 2019 in which the aim is the seek of the right harmony and/or contrast between the ingredients of a painting: colour, form and composition; deliberately subtracting the artwork from the most immediate meanings and choosing for this reason a purely informal and abstract language.

The artworks inspired the poet Francisco del Moral to compose some verses that underline another kind of maridaje: the one between subject and observer

You know that sometimes it’s hard to understand you.

When you show yourself blue or yellowing your eyes suddently,

you become that grey that silences or,

despite the effort, you can’t green as much as i’d like, as much as the occasion deserves.

But if I stay alert, it’s easy to see the harmony of every new nouance:

colors interwine and understand each other in one lively spirit.
